Coach Hamada on TV

Legendary 'Iolani coach Eddie Hamada '46 will be featured on the television program Back in the Day on Sunday, September 23 at 6:30 p.m. and 10:30 p.m. on KHON Channel 2.

Back in the Day - produced by Russell Shimooka and hosted by  KHON sports anchor and 'Iolani graduate Kanoa Leahey - is a 30 minute journey down Memory Lane for sports fans. The show bridges generations by reflecting on Hawaii's most meaningful past sports stories and events.

Hamada played football for Father Kenneth Bray, inspired by Bray's emphasis of the One Team philosophy.

After Hamada graduated from 'Iolani, he attended Emporia State Teachers College in Kansas. He returned to 'Iolani to teach algebra, business math and typing at the new Ala Wai campus in 1953. He was an assistant footbal coach under Harold Silva and Tommy Kaulukukui.

In 1961, he  was named head football coach, a position he held until 1987. He was also the atheltic director until 1991.  In 1987, 'Iolani named its track and field after him.

He is one of 'Iolani's most beloved and respected educators, always treating each of his players with fairness. He touched countless lives beyond the sports realm and the 'Iolani campus as well, leading by example and unafraid to win and lose with dignity.
