Gr. 4 Visits Maritime Museum

The Class of 2014 went to the Hawai‘i Maritime Museum, located next to the Aloha Tower Marketplace.  Inside the museum, they learned about Hawai‘i’s rich maritime traditions.  Outside, they toured the Falls of Clyde, the world’s only four-masted, fully rigged ship.

The students found interesting exhibits in the museum about Polynesian voyaging and migration, whaling and other maritime industries, and surfing.  There were numerous artifacts on display like fishhooks, traps, and weapons made with shark teeth.  Hanging from the ceiling of the museum, they saw different types of canoes and a humpback whale skeleton.

As a light rain fell, the students walked the decks of the Falls of Clyde.  Below the main deck, there were photos depicting the ship’s history.  Topside, they entered the captain’s quarters, stood on the poop deck, and saw the kitchen and bunkhouse.

From the early discovery of the islands by the Polynesians to the present day, the Class of 2014 experienced an eye-opening adventure.
