The Lower School Modern Jazz class was delighted to work with Keables Chair Scott Kim, Ph.D during his recent two-week residency at `Iolani School. The fifth and sixth grade dancers worked collectively to design Chinese zodiac animal forms comprised of large geometric shapes. Dr. Kim inspired the dancers to discover creative methods to integrate themselves and their movement in bringing the shapes to life.
The tangram dance was performed for faculty and special guests at the Keables Reception at the conclusion of Scott Kim’s visit.

The dancers all agree that working with Dr. Kim was an incredible learning experience. One dancer exclaimed, “It was so cool to dance about math and to work as a team!” In addition to guiding the class in numerous rehearsals, Dr. Kim shared his experiences of incorporating modern dance and mathematics in an informal question & answer session.
