Nationally recognized Kim Sutton of Creative Mathematics was on campus working with several groups of Lower School students. In a few hours, Mrs. Sutton visited kindergarten, first, fourth, and fifth grades. Each visit brought excitement to students and teachers alike.
The first class Mrs. Sutton visited was first grade. Her engaging lesson included a multi-sensory approach, which stressed the importance of math vocabulary. In fourth grade she reinforced the concept of averages using her energetic and enthusiastic teaching style.
Who knew you could make mean, mode, and median exciting! In kindergarten Mrs. Sutton used songs and movement to get students totally involved mentally and physically. Her fifth grade lesson was a little more traditional. Each student used a newspaper circle to learn and review tons of vocabulary from chord to equilateral triangle to diameter to trapezoid. The lesson ended with a song that was age-appropriate.
Mrs. Sutton did a tremendous job with all four classes in spite of some of her supplies not making it from California. She definitely made math fun!
