Space Night

The good fortune of Leap Day brought clear skies to the 10th Annual Third Grade Space Night on Friday, February 29.  Third graders revolved around the Iolani Solar System, which included stations manned by parents and community volunteers.

Highlights were: Star Lab (a dome with projected constellations) brought by Iolani parent, Dr. Narayan Raja and his graduate students; homemade bottle rocket launches; telescopes, brought by Dr. Chris Peterson (Department of Planetary Science, UH) and other members of the Hawaii Astronomy Society; Robotic Mars-scape Experience with rovers (with help from First Lego League Robo-Raiders); demonstrations by UH professor, Peter Onaka, with an infrared camera and liquid nitrogen; and navigation pointers (with real stars) by 6th grade social studies teacher, Ms. Catherine Fuller.

Many third graders and their families also enjoyed camping on the art building lawn. Special thanks to co-chairs Susan Hori, Lisa Gallacher, and Erlaine Bello for heading this star-studded event.

Now on to Mini Society!
