Writing and Math Workshops

Sharing knowledge with parents took on a new look when the kindergarten teachers combined the writing AND math workshops into an all day event on Wednesday, November 16.  Their goal was to introduce both the kindergarten writing  program and the math enrichment component so that parents would better understand the approach taken in these important, formative years.

The purpose of the morning’s language arts workshop was to share the stages of writing and the concept of “inventive spelling.”  This prepared the adults for the writing activity with their child that followed in the classroom.  At eleven o’clock, the parents had lunch with their children, interacted with the other families, and many took advantage of the opportunity to visit the Iolani Lower School Book Fair.  In the afternoon, the parents returned to Seto Hall for the math presentation, which was followed by three interactive  centers with the children in the classroom.

In the past, these two presentations were on separate days, but the feedback this year from the parents was predominately positive about spending the entire day at school.  Many commented that it seemed more relaxed, and they really enjoyed both the learning opportunities and the special time for the teachers, children, and families to come together!
