Indicative of the importance our parents place on their children's education, 100% of the families were represented at the all day writing and math workshops offered on Wednesday, November 14! For the third consecutive year the kindergarten teachers introduced both the writing program and the math enrichment component on the same day, so that early in the year the parents would better understand the approaches used at 'Iolani.
The morning started off with refreshments on the lanai of Seto Hall, giving the parents the chance to get to know each other better in a relaxed atmosphere.
Next the mothers and fathers moved into Seto Hall to listen to the language arts teachers share the stages of writing and the concept of "inventive spelling." This information prepared the adults for the writing activity with their children in the classrooms.
After having lunch together, many parents took advantage of the opportunity to visit the Lower School Book Fair.
In the afternoon, the parents returned to Seto Hall for the math presentation, during which the "hands on" approach used for many of the skills covered in the kindergarten year were explained and illustrated. The parents then joined their children in the classrooms to move through three interactive centers.
The evaluations expressed appreciation for the information they received and for the insight they now have after working one-on-one with their child. What a wonderful day we all…teachers, parents, and children…experienced!
