The 2009 edition of the Spring Dance Showcase, Pictures in Paradise, was inspired by picturesque images of Hawai’i. Against a backdrop of photographic artistry reflective of our island way of life, `Iolani’s dancers performed before two standing-room-only crowds at 5:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. on Friday, May 15, in the Lower Gym.
The cast featured three hundred sixty students from grades three through twelve, dancing to diverse choreography celebrating local landmarks like Waikiki Beach, Aloha Tower Marketplace, and Blaisdell Arena. Hula numbers provided depth and dynamic dimension to themes such as volcano, mountains, flowers, and cruisin’. Jazz and ballet pieces brought to life the imagery of ocean and sky.
The evening of dance concluded with the annual senior tribute presented by the Class of 2009, followed by a Finale number including Upper School cast members. This year’s Spring Dance Showcase presented a unique opportunity to bring the year-end performances back to the `Iolani campus for the first time in many years. All of the talented dancers ranging from the first-timers to the soon-to-graduate put forth a rousing effort that did not disappoint.
