I Wrote That?

Passersby probably wondered what was happening in the 'Iolani student center  yesterday afternoon. There were shrieks of surprise. There was uncontrollable laughter. Tears were even  shed. Hoots and howls roared like waves.

The event was the annual Cano Letter Opening, an end-of-school-year tradition when members of the senior class open and read letters they wrote to themselves as seventh graders. The letters were part of an 'Iolani English class project that was founded by the late teacher Watajeen Cano.

Teacher Leslie Evans coordinated the afternoon, making sure that seniors found their seventh grade teachers who distributed the letters. Retired teacher Bob Harrison returned to campus for this special occasion. Some classes created seventh grade video tapes.

And what did the seniors find? Some students tucked away mementos of the 2001-02 school year such as photographs, medals, money, and diaries. One student saved the 'Iolani School Bulletin magazine with story about 9/11 on the cover.

Later, seniors enjoyed ice cream floats as the student center overflowed with memories.
