On Friday, September 14th, the entire seventh grade enjoyed Discover Iolani Day.
The students had two periods of team-building R.O.P.E.S. activities, three periods devoted to an art activity, and three periods of scavenger hunt to visit helpful locations on campus.
In the course of their adventures, students took photographs intended for display outside their homerooms in time for the Ohana Open House.
The art project this year incorporated the ideas from the students' summer reading, Blue Skin of the Sea and Tangerine. The theme of both books is dreams. The painted panels of cloud formations, designed by each of the 27 teams of seventh graders, will soon be mounted in the Castle Building corridors.
All seventh graders have been writing poems about their dreams in their English classes; their poetry will be added to the mural.
Mrs. Holly Chung, the grade seven art teacher, and science teacher, Mr. Scott Rountree, directed the massive art project.
Mr. Chuck Nakoa of the P.E. department led The R.O.P.E.S. activities.
Mrs. Kathy Hanlon planned the scavenger hunt.
All the grade seven teachers participated in various ways to support the seventh graders in their activities during the day.
The final event of the day featured ice cakies served at the art project site to all seventh graders.
This annual fall event helps seventh graders learn their way around the Upper School, build class spirit, and make new friends. Some of the scavenger hunt tasks involved visiting the Upper School and Lower School libraries, the Student Activities Office, the Infirmary (finding the Automated External Defibrillators located around campus), doing a good deed, and navigating the ‘Iolani webpage in the Castle Computer lab.
