Tackling Real World Problems
The Sullivan Center for Innovation and Leadership at ‘Iolani School is a sustainably-designed 40,000 square foot, four-story facility dedicated to citizenship, applied technology, scientific discovery, and digital communication.
Focusing on 21st century learning skills, the Sullivan Center includes a fabrication lab, flexible project spaces, collaboration classrooms, a digital media lab, a rooftop garden, and a research lab.
SUSTAINABLE DESIGN
The Sullivan Center is LEED Gold Certified and is the first Collaborative for High Performance Schools (CHPS) certified school building in Hawai‘i.
Energy efficient elements in the Sullivan Center include orienting the building facing south to maximize the amount of natural day lighting. Solar photovoltaics (PV) are maximized on the roof.
Other sustainable features include:
- 43% Energy Savings - Through energy efficient technologies, this building saves enough energy to power and cool approximately 3,670 average-sized homes each day.
- Smart Lighting - Occupancy sensors turn off lights when a room is unoccupied and lighting sensors adjust brightness according to the amount of daylight entering a room.
- 41% Water Savings - The Sullivan Center saves 18,000 gallons of water a year by utilizing water efficient fixtures such as low-flow toilets, automated lavatories, and waterless urinals.
- Sustainable Architecture - During construction, 85% of waste was diverted from landfills by donating, recycling and reusing materials. The products used in the construction of this facility contain 23% recycled materials.

KA‘I PROGRAM
The mission of Kūkulu Alaka‘i ‘Iolani ("The Creation of Leaders") is to raise life outcomes of under-resourced students through a comprehensive longterm program that provides educational opportunities, critical life skills, and individualized support from middle school through postsecondary education.
The KA‘I Program began in 2010 as a public-private school partnership between ‘Iolani School and Jarrett Middle School in Palolo Valley. This partnership has since grown to include the high schools in which KA‘I students enroll.

‘IOLANI HACKERS
‘Iolani Hackers is a team of students and faculty who operate out of the Sullivan Center's Fabrication Lab with the simple mission to pull off "random hacks of kindness."
Bridging the gap between art and technology, these hacks range in scope from large scale art and multimedia installations to the design and fabrication of apparel and merchandise for the ‘Iolani Fair.
