AI at ʻIolani School

Innovation with responsibility. Learning with discernment.

At ʻIolani, we approach artificial intelligence as an educational opportunity that prepares students to think deeply and act responsibly in a rapidly changing world. We help students understand how these tools work, while cultivating the discernment, character, and judgment to use them wisely.

OUR AI VALUES

We emphasize targeted, thoughtful design in how AI is integrated into our curriculum – supporting students in developing their own voices and scholarly skills. While we embrace AI, it will not replace student work nor take away from the academic rigor of our programs.

Human-Centered

AI supports but never replaces our "One Team" bonds and connection.

Discernment

Developing sound judgment to use AI wisely as both a learner and citizen of this world

Responsible Use

Through clear classroom standards, students are being taught to cite AI use and take ownership of their work.

Foundations and Pathways

From Lower School skills building, AI literacy classes in grades 7 and 9 to advanced Machine Learning, we provide pathways for every student.

Safety and Privacy

We only use tools that meet high safety and privacy standards.

Ethical Design Practices

Embedding care and reflection to build AI that empowers people and honors human dignity

GROUNDED INNOVATION

At the core of ʻIolani School’s mission is our “One Team” value of unselfish cooperation and mutual support. We believe that a school must be challenging and competitive — yet compassionate and humane. This ethos guides us as we integrate AI under the principle of grounded innovation, a deliberate balance between our commitment to stay innovative and our responsibility to protect and guide our students.

OUR K-12 APPROACH

By prioritizing human-centered thinking in the younger and middle grades, we ensure that by the time students reach the Upper School, they have the skills to engage ethically with AI tools. Our curriculum provides various pathways for every student to develop basic AI literacy, in addition to cutting-edge Upper School elective courses that prepare students for the AI industry.

LOWER SCHOOL

Our approach is intentionally developmental with K-6 students. We focus on building the foundations that support responsible AI engagement: algorithmic thinking, digital citizenship, ethical reasoning and character.

UPPER SCHOOL

We build AI literacy through experiences designed to help students understand technology and how to use it responsibly. They develop skills to evaluate AI outputs and analyze how these tools impact individuals and society.

ONGOING INQUIRY

Through intentional design and ongoing inquiry, we are cultivating a school community where ethics are considered in every AI-related project – preparing students to shape the future thoughtfully and responsibly.

AI LAB: FROM USERS TO CREATORS

In recognition that AI is rapidly transforming industry and society at large, our AI Lab in the Sullivan Center for Innovation and Leadership is designed to use cutting-edge AI tools and emerging technologies. This specialized space allows us to move beyond basic use into advanced Machine Learning coursework, robotics and research — opportunities typically reserved for university-level study.

  • Mentorship: Students work side-by-side with faculty and industry mentors to navigate the technical and ethical challenges of emerging technology.
  • Advanced Student Projects: A hallmark of the SCIL, the AI Lab gives students the resources to develop their own ideas into purposeful, real-world projects.
  • Exploring Emerging Tech: The AI Lab is a space for all faculty, staff and students to safely explore and responsibly adapt these technologies.

ELEVATING STUDENT LEARNING

Innovation at ‘Iolani extends across our entire campus. We integrate advanced technology into our curriculum to show students how these tools can enhance human inquiry and creativity in every field. Our students engage in:

LEADING WITH OUR STUDENTS

Students are central to our work through the Digital Literacy Ambassadors (DLA). This student-led group works closely with faculty to advise on our AI guidance and ethical frameworks while sharing their unique perspectives on learning in a digital age. Below are perspectives from DLA students:

QINGQING CHEN

Class of 2027

"Understanding how AI works is like learning ‘the’ language of the future. If we don't know how it's built, then we can't question it ... or improve it."

ANAÏS ORTEGA

Class of 2026

"As AI models continue to increase in capacity, I think it is critically important that my peers are aware of both the advantages and limitations these tools present."

TATA LI

Class of 2027

"In exploring the new frontier of education, students and teachers become part of a larger global movement. I look forward to seeing how the new technology can advance the educational experience."

HAILEY MOON

Class of 2027

"AI should only remain as a tool to amplify our voices, not replace them. It is impossible to go back to a life when AI did not exist. What matters, starting now, is how we are going to coexist."

EXPERTISE: THE AI ADVISORY GROUP

Our work is guided by an AI Advisory Group of alumni and parents who lead at world-renowned technology companies. This "One Team" partnership ensures our curriculum remains informed by current industry trends while staying deeply rooted in ‘Iolani’s educational mission.

  • Strategic Insight: Advising on the skills students need for future success.
  • Industry Trends: Providing a direct window into the evolving professional landscape; advising on AI lab needs and vision.
  • Mission Alignment: Ensuring innovation never comes at the expense of our core values.

Preparing our students for this future is a shared responsibility. It is a “One Team” effort where faculty and families provide the framework, and students develop the mastery to make good judgments. We are learning, evolving, and leading together.
