Community & Civic Engagement

Aloha is the heart of Community & Civic Engagement at ʻIolani School. By prioritizing pilina (balanced, regenerative relationships), we nurture a shared understanding of the common good that activates One Team. With our founders as guides, we build capacity for informed, committed and constructive participation in community life.

The ʻIolani Community & Civic Engagement (C+CE) Office provides rich opportunities for students to explore their purpose through service, civic engagement, and values-driven experiential learning, both in and out of the classroom.

Avenues for engagement

Meaningful connections

AIMEE

Through C+CE, Aimee interned with Hawaiʻi Land Trust, helping create social media posts, writing book reviews and more.

“I got to learn so much about Hawaiian culture, historic land spaces and the power of conservation, and volunteer work to help maintain the rights of future generations to truly experience Hawaiʻi. My message to fellow students is to be bold and pursue any ideas and interests you’re curious about!”

ANANYA

Ananya found volunteering at the Honolulu Zoo to be a perfect fit.

“I contacted our Director of C+CE, looking for volunteer positions that would be fitting for me. She connected me with a program at the Honolulu Zoo and since I started, I haven’t stopped talking about it with all my friends! Some of them have even joined me in teaching kids about animals at the Zoo.”

L2A PARTICIPANTS

Students develop projects in the Legacy2Action Community Impact Challenge.

Legacy2Action offers the skills-building that supports community-centered action projects for individuals and classes. C+CE partners with the 100th Infantry Battalion Clubhouse and the University of Hawai‘i Center on Aging to host the program.

“This legacy is such a major part of Hawaiʻi’s identity; it is essential that we keep it alive through our own service, so it is not forgotten.”

Sustainability at ʻIolani

At ʻIolani, we are committed to sustainability through place-based education, service-learning, civic engagement and environmentally-focused research and innovation. We center aloha and mālama ʻāina. Along with a strong focus on the local environment, we embrace a shared kuleana for healthy, sustainable and equitable futures for all, on a global scale.
‘Iolani School’s commitment to environmental sustainability is deeply intertwined with our school mission and philosophy of engagement. Our prioritization of pilina drives our stewardship.

'Intersections' Sustainability fair

wHERE ALOHA

Where Aloha is a second-hand fashion map with an accompanying shop guide, created by students Lana and Sophia in their Sequence 9 C+CE course. As part of an effort to address consumerism, this interactive platform highlights an abundance of sustainable, local thrift shops on Oʻahu. The students invite us all to join in their mission to eliminate mass production, pollution, textile waste and the many other harms of the fast-fashion industry.

GREENPLACES Report

In 2023, ʻIolani School partnered with GreenPlaces, a sustainability software program that worked with students to calculate the School’s carbon footprint. Since then, students have utilized this audit to inform curricular and community-based action, as ʻIolani works as "One Team" to reduce the school’s carbon footprint.
