Offering a wide range of digital tools, ‘Iolani School promotes the innovative, yet purposeful use of technology to create, communicate and collaborate as part of the overall learning experience.
Through the school's One-to-One iPad Program, all students and teachers in all grade levels are provided with an iPad on a four-year rotation (next refresh will be in the summer of 2026). The current hardware for the upcoming school year is as follows:
- Grades K-2: iPad (9th Gen)
- Grades 3-6: iPad (9th Gen) with Apple Keyboard
- Grades 7-12: iPad Pro 12.9" (5th Gen) with Apple Keyboard
General Information
Student Accounts
An 'Iolani Student Account is provided to each student. This account allows access the following:
- Google Email
- G Suite for Education - Including, but not limited to Drive, Docs, Sheets, Slides, Forms & Calendar
- Google Classroom
- YouTube (filtered)
- Zoom
- Adobe
- Canvas (LMS)
- Veracross (for grade and schedule access)
In addition, each student is provided with a school-managed Apple ID (for use with the iPad) that utilizes their 'Iolani Student Account.
Email (and G Suite) access varies by grade:
- Grades K-2: No Access - Students in Grades K-2 do not have access to email. Documents may be shared internally. In order to increase security, students in these grades do not have their names used as part of G Suite. (May vary for non-full time students)
- Grades 3-6: Limited Access - Students in Grades 3-6 do not have access to email sent from outside the 'Iolani School domain (but can send and receive internally to 'Iolani School accounts). Documents may be shared internally. In order to increase security, students in these grades do not have their names used as part of G Suite. (May vary for non-full time students)
- Grades 7-12: Full Access - Students in Grades 7-12 have access to email and sharing in and out of the institution. (May vary for non-full time students)
Hardware
Through the One-to-One iPad Program, all students and teachers are provided with an iPad. In addition, students and teachers have access to a range of devices on different platforms including:
- Desktops (PC and Mac)
- Laptops (PC and Mac)
- Chromebooks
All classrooms are equipped with display devices with audio, including:
- SMART Board Interactive Displays (mounted or on rolling carts)
- Flat Panel Displays (with AppleTV)
- Projectors
Software
‘Iolani School utilizes Veracross for course, grade, and attendance management. In addition, the school uses the following.
- G Suite for Education (Grades K-12) Including, but not limited to Gmail, Drive, Docs, Sheets, Slides, Forms, Calendar, Classroom & YouTube

Internet Access
'Iolani students are provided with filtered internet access via a campus-wide Wi-Fi network (SSID: io) using their 'Iolani Student Account.
Web Filtering: 'Iolani School uses Impero's ContentKeeper for on-device iPad web filtering (both on and off campus). Students connected to the 'Iolani Wi-Fi network on campus (from any device) will also have limited filtered access to the internet.
Blocked Website Access: If you would like to access a website that is not blocked by the web filter, please use this Web Filter Request Form. Once submitted, the requested website will be evaluated for whitelisting.
Privacy Policy (COPPA)
The Children's Online Privacy and Protection Act, more commonly known as COPPA, is a law dealing with how websites, apps, and other online operators collect data and personal information from kids under the age of 13.

iPad Models & Accessories
Lower School (Grades K-6): iPad (9th Generation) - Silver - 64GB - WiFi only
Upper School (Grades 7-12): iPad Pro (5th Generation) - 12.9” - Silver - 128GB - WiFi Only
In addition to the iPad, all students will receive a case, charger, and cable. Students in Grades 3-12 will also receive an Apple Keyboard.
Apple Pencils are not provided. Purchase/use is optional. For those planning to purchase an Apple Pencil, please reference the following for compatibility:
- Grades K-6: iPad - 1st Generation Apple Pencil
- Grades 7-12: iPad Pro - 2nd Generation Apple Pencil
* 1st and 2nd Generation Apple Pencils are NOT cross-compatible (ex. 1st Generation Apple Pencil cannot be used with an iPad Pro)
** NEW Apple Pencil Pro (released May 2024) is NOT compatible with the current iPad model used at 'Iolani
Managed Apple ID
Managed Apple IDs (accessed via an 'Iolani Student Account) are provided to all students in Grades K-12 and controlled by 'Iolani School. Features of a Managed Apple ID include:
- 200GB of Storage for iCloud backups (normally 5GB)
- Access to Apple Classroom (for teachers)
- No Purchasing (of free or paid apps)
Apps & App Store
The App Store is removed on all student iPads. All required educational and productivity apps are purchased by 'Iolani School and sent directly to the each iPad (apps will vary depending by grade and class). Use the Self Service app to download or reinstall apps.
App Requests: If you would like to use an app that is not provided by the school, please use the App Request Form. If the requested app conforms to the ‘Iolani Acceptable Use Policy, we will consider adding it to your iPad. Please note: Only apps with educational value are added. Games and entertainment apps are not added.
iMessage and FaceTime are disabled on student iPads.
Management & Filtering
Mobile Device Management (MDM): All school-owned iPads are configured via MDM. MDM allows 'Iolani School to manage iPads in real time for device setup, updates, app deployment and security.
Web Filtering: On school-owned iPads, web content is filtered via Content Keeper both on and off campus (at home or otherwise).
Blocked Website Access: If you would like to access a website that is not blocked by the web filter, please use this Web Filter Request Form. Once submitted, the requested website will be evaluated for whitelisting.
iPad & iBooks FAQ

How do I hard reset my iPad?
When troubleshooting your iPad, a HARD RESET may be necessary. Hard resetting your iPad does not delete or erase data in most situations. Note: A hard reset is different than a normal shutdown or power off.
Lower School (Grades K-6): iPad Air - Locate the Power Button (top edge, right) and Home button. Remove the outer case if needed (to access buttons).
- Press and hold BOTH the Power and Home buttons until the Apple logo reappears (up to 15 seconds)
Upper School (Grades 7-12): iPad Pro - Locate the Volume Buttons (right edge, top) and the Power Button (top edge, right). Remove the outer case if needed (to access buttons). Perform the following in sequence.
- Press and quickly release the Volume Up button
- Press and quickly release the Volume Down button
- Press and hold the Power button until the Apple logo reappears (up to 15 seconds)
How do I purchase an iBook on my iPad?
'Iolani-managed Apple ID accounts (Apple ID's where the ending is @iolani.org) CANNOT be used to make purchases. A personal or family Apple ID is recommended to purchase iBooks on your iPad.
→ If you need to create an Apple ID for your student to use, one can be created by going to http://appleid.apple.com and clicking "Create your Apple ID". Fill out the form using your student's email address, but change the ending to @apple.iolani.org. For instance, if your student's 'Iolani email address is beststudent@iolani.org, the Apple ID should be beststudent@apple.iolani.org.
- On the iPad, find and tap the Books App
- Tap the Profile Icon Silhouette in the top right corner
- Scroll down below View Account Settings and tap Sign Out
- Again, tap the Profile Icon Silhouettein the top right corner
- Tap Use Existing Apple ID
- Use the Apple ID email and password of the account in which you would like to make the iBook purchase.
- You can now search for and purchase any iBook needed for the school year.
What do I do if my iPad breaks?
Distance Learning Program
Zoom
'Iolani School uses Zoom video conferencing services to provide instruction for distance learning.
Recordings: Zoom classes are sometimes recorded for students to make up past work. These recordings are deleted after 14 days unless the teacher feels it necessary to archive data longer.
Requirements
System Requirements
- An internet connection – broadband wired or wireless (3G or 4G/LTE)
- Speakers and a microphone – built-in or USB plug-in or wireless Bluetooth
- A webcam or HD webcam - built-in or USB plug-in
Supported Devices
In addition to the school-issued iPads, Zoom is supported on a wide-range of other commonly-used devices including, but not limited to, the following:
- Windows desktops, laptops and tablets
- Apple desktops, laptops and phones
- Android tablets and phones

Bandwidth Requirements
The bandwidth used by Zoom will be optimized for the best experience based on the participants’ network. It will automatically adjust for 3G, WiFi or Wired environments.
Recommended bandwidth for meetings and webinar panelists:
- For 1:1 video calling:
- 600kbps (up/down) for high quality video
- 1.2 Mbps (up/down) for 720p HD video
- Receiving 1080p HD video requires 1.8 Mbps (up/down)
- Sending 1080p HD video requires 1.8 Mbps (up/down)
- For group video calling:
- 800kbps/1.0Mbps (up/down) for high quality video
- For gallery view and/or 720p HD video: 1.5Mbps/1.5Mbps (up/down)
- Receiving 1080p HD video requires 2.5mbps (up/down)
- Sending 1080p HD video requires 3.0 Mbps (up/down)
Security
‘Iolani School makes every reasonable attempt to try to prevent abuse within the Zoom video conferencing environment. When creating meetings, the following security features are enabled to prevent unauthorized participation:
- User Authentication - Only users with an 'Iolani Email Account (ending in @iolani.org) are allowed to join meetings.
- Waiting Room - Allows the host to control if and when a participant can join a meeting.
* If a non-'Iolani guest speaker will be attending the meeting, user authentication will be temporarily removed, but the waiting room feature will remain on to prevent unauthorized entry.

How do I get Zoom on my device?
All iPads distributed from ‘Iolani have the Zoom app installed. However, students will need to sign in to the Zoom app (see next item).
Non-'Iolani Devices
If you choose to use Zoom on a device other than the one provided by ‘Iolani, we recommend downloading the Zoom app. Using a browser, navigate to http://zoom.us/download Click on the Zoom client that is applicable to your operating system and/or platform.
Note: Zoom will also function within a web browser, however its functionality is limited, some features are unavailable, and the quality of the audio and video is diminished.
How do I sign in?
Most Zoom meetings or classes require users to be logged into an ‘Iolani account. This is done to ensure that the meeting is safe and secure with only confirmed ‘Iolani students in attendance. You do not need to create a Zoom account with your ‘Iolani email address -- an account has already been created for you.
Open Zoom on your device. You will be presented with a choice between “Join a Meeting” and “Sign In”.
Click or tap “Sign In”
IMPORTANT! Sign in with SSO
Next, type in your ‘Iolani email address or iolani as the company name (iolani may be pre-filled) and click Continue

For the next step, Zoom will open your web browser and require you to login using your ‘Iolani email account. The steps will vary depending on your gmail accounts and type of browser.
- Option 1: You might be asked to enter your email address. Type in your ‘Iolani email address.
- Option 2: You might be asked to select your account. Choose your ‘Iolani email address
Continue to login with your ‘Iolani username and password

You will eventually receive a box similar to this… Click Open zoom.us
The Zoom app should now reopen and you will be signed in to Zoom.
How do I join a meeting/class?
Joining a meeting is simple. Click or Tap Join
Enter in your Zoom Meeting ID (provided by your teacher) and click or tap Join.
⇾ Note: If you are using the Zoom Scheduler on your ‘Iolani iPad, simply click on the Zoom button for the class you wish to attend. The Zoom app should open and you will join the meeting automatically.
IMPORTANT! After joining, click Join with Internet Audio on iPads (or Join with Computer Audio on Desktops/Laptops) to connect audio.
Troubleshooting: What do I do if I can't sign in?
Sign-in issues on Zoom are typically caused by your browser already being logged in with another Gmail or Google account. To fix this, log out of all Google accounts using the following steps:
- In that same browser window, type in www.gmail.com.
- In the upper right corner, click or tap on your username or initial
Click Sign out of all accounts and go back through the Zoom sign-in process.
IMPORTANT! Use the Sign in with SSO option to sign in.
